The continuing saga of the Rebert family, which began with THE GREATEST OF THESE IS LOVE and the Civil War, follow these love stories, while they are constantly clouded by a changing American culture - Women's Rights and Suffrage, the birth of the modern cities, World War 1, and Prohibition.
This book was written as a portrait of a family - but a portrait pieced together of facts and conjecture, against a background of America's emerging growth, of powerful men, of great events and decisions. I have traced the stories of places and people: of Christ Church, Littlestown, and Hanover, of the aftermath of Civil War, the Women Suffrage movement, and of my German ancestors.
The facts call for a certain explanation. Many times I have had to rely on the authority of oral history. I have taken the author's liberty of adjusting some dates to make the story flow more naturally. And finally I have changed some names and created a few fictional characters.
Let me say, then, that I have selected facts and arranged them, to make a portrait of a family. The family is mine; for the most part these people lived, loved, and fought their own personal demons.
The portrait on the cover is that of my great-grandfather and great-grandmother - Alex and Lillie Rebert.
